Template:Character Infobox Hak (ハク Haku), or Son Hak (ソン・ハク Son Haku) as he was known at the beginning of the story, is the former General and Chief of the Wind Tribe. He is an adopted child of Son Mundok, the adoptive brother of Tae-Yeon, and the childhood friend of Yona and Soo-Won. He is known throughout Kouka as the “Thunder Beast” due to his outstanding fighting skills. He helps Yona escape from Hiryuu Castle after Soo-Won kills Emperor Il.

Appearance

File:Hak appearance.png

Hak is described as a tall, handsome young man with sharp blue eyes. He has short, messy black hair with fringes hanging below his eyes. He has a well-built frame that is cultivated from his fights and trainings.

He wears a sleeveless blue overcoat seamed with bluish black hemlines over a royal blue robe with black collar and sash. He ties black ribbons in a crisscross pattern over the lower half of his sleeves to prevent them from getting in the way when he is fighting. Underneath his robe, he wears black pants and a pair of dark brown boots overlaid with more crisscross-patterned ribbons on the shaft. Occasionally, he can be seen wearing a sledge hat when he is hiding his identity.[1]

He always carries his signature weapon, a Hsu Quandao, most of the time with its blade draped in a white cloth held by a black strap.

Personality

Hak is a mischievous and loyal person who strives to protect Yona at all costs. He has a habit of being a bully and likes branding some of the others, like Kija and Jae-Ha, with names. Despite being playful, he is serious whenever it comes to his job. He doesn’t let personal matters interfere with his work, and does his best to do the most he can. His professionalism extends to a point where he addresses his childhood friends by their status.[2] His devotion to his job roots from his belief to Emperor Il. At first, he had no intention to get involved on the royal family as he saw it as troublesome. However, when he witnessed the emperor’s bravery, he swore loyalty to them, seeing that he couldn’t leave them alone.[3]

When it comes to his heart, he doesn’t let his greed take over him and destroys his impulses every time they resurface. There are times that he will show his affection in a teasing manner, but that’s the limitation of what he will show. However, when someone (particularly Jae-Ha) questions the distance he made between him and Yona, he loses his composure and can become aggressive for his emotions towards her.[4] Despite that, he still knows where to place himself, and chooses to support her to the best he can, even if he is hurting deep inside sometimes.

Background

Hak as a child

Hak as a child

Hak was adopted by Mundok, though the specifics of this event are still unknown. Under Mundok’s guidance, he became one of the strongest members of the Wind Tribe. At some point in time, he became friends with Yona and Soo-Won and whenever he and his grandfather visited the Hiryuu Castle, he always played with the two of them.

By the age of thirteen, he was powerful enough to defeat Lee Geun-Tae who was already a general at that time. At fifteen, he became Mundok’s successor and Yona’s exclusive bodyguard. Initially, he was against the idea of being a servant, telling Emperor Il that he wouldn’t be able to take afternoon naps if he were to accept the task. He also deemed the job impossible to be done, due to of the emperor’s dislike of weapons. However, when Yona was being assaulted by Kan Tae-Jun, he stopped him and finally accepted the position Emperor Il offered.[5]

When he reached eighteen, he became the General Commander at the castle. Added to his list of titles is 'Chief of the Wind Tribe', which makes him one very young and accomplished person.

Abilities

Spear Fighting: Hak's spear fighting skills are the best in the country. His speed and strength allow him to deal powerful blows, even sweeping aside a large area of fog with one swift strike. Aside from his mastery in spear, he is also good in swordsmanship and archery.

Immense Strength: He is noted to have an unusual strength by numerous people.[6][7] Even without his weapon, he can deal strong blows with his fists.

Endurance: One of his more defining attributes is his stalwart heartiness, first shown when enduring a bite from a poisonous snake when protecting Yona. That being said, this may be mostly due to his determination to live and protect Yona.

Relationships

Mundok

Hak being scolded by Mundok

Hak was adopted by Mundok as an orphan and they share a caring, yet casual relationship. Hak refuses to call Mundok “Grandpa” and also refuses to hug him when they see each other, believing that he is already too old to be doing such things. But when Hak is being disrespectful, especially to the royal family, he is not spared from Mundok’s discipline.Template:-

Yona

Hak kisses Yona's forehead

Hak shares a close friendship with Yona, often playfully bicker with each other. He feels overprotective of her and often teases her to try to get her to do what he says if he thinks it’s for her best. He has been in love with her ever since he was young, but he has grown to suppress his desires of doing anything outside their friendship. After Jae-Ha questions his relationship with Yona, he attends Yona to her wounds, when pouring honey on her hands, he spills it all over her hands. He takes them and starts licking them clean. After Yona runs away, he questions himself. After they become fugitives, he is asked by Yona to still call her “Princess” to retain who she was once and he accepts her request with no hesitation.[8]

Because of his oath to Emperor Il to protect her, he considers himself as a tool for her to use[9] and will practically do anything for her sake. For this reason, he gets scared whenever Yona is reckless[10] and even at one point states that he wants to ‘tie her down’ so that he could stop her.[11] However, at the same time he gets excited to see her finish the risky things she gets herself into because he want to see her suffer like a human being, which is something she was unable to do previously, due to of her lifestyle. [12] Although some may believe he wants to hide Yona, in reality he wants to show her off to everyone, especially the people who chased her out of the castle, and tell them how fine of a princess she is.[13]

Soo-Won

Soo-Won and Hak were childhood friends in the past and their friendship seemed unbreakable. Both of them respected each other’s abilities and due to this, Hak trained harder than before so that he can be someone worthy of a goal for Soo-Won –who aspired to be as strong as him– and can equally walk with him someday.[14] As Hak trusted Soo-Won completely, he believed that he could leave Yona to his care,[15] hiding all his feelings for the princess. He even offered himself as his ‘right hand’ if he and Yona ever got married one day, promising that he would support them until he died.[16] However, after Soo-Won killed Emperor Il, their friendship totally collapsed.

Like Yona, he is also inflicted with pain from Soo-Won’s betrayal but didn't outwardly show it to anyone. Deep inside, he is seething with bloodlust and would like to make Soo-Won pay for what he did to Yona and Emperor Il. However, he is also completely saddened by what happened to the three of them and to their relationship that has gone to waste.

Emperor Il

At first, Hak thinks of Emperor Il as a 'bubbly' king who is a coward.[17] However, when the emperor stopped Tae-Jun from initiating a fight by grabbing the blade of his sword, he started to respect him and vowed immense loyalty to him and his family. Because Emperor Il was his master, he is guilt-stricken from when he was unable to save him from Soo-Won, even saying that he will regret it for the rest of his life.[18] Throughout the dangers he and Yona faces, he always asks Emperor Il for his guidance, as well as for him not to take Yona away from him.[19]

Yoon

Hak regards Yoon as a very valuable person on their team.[20] As Yoon provides them with great meals, he rarely gives out insults towards him like he usually does with Yona and the others. Despite Yoon lacking in physical strength, Hak sees him as a very strong person and is able to trust him with looking out for Yona.[21]

Kija

Hak forms a rivalry with Kija after the latter asks him to leave Yona’s side as he was no longer needed.[22] His contempt towards him even becomes more complicated when Yona asks Kija to protect him.[23] From then on, he calls him “White Snake”[24] and takes advantage of his entomophobia (fear of bugs). Even with their rocky relationship, Hak considers Kija’s power to be exhilarating as there was no one who fought like him at the castle.[25] They are also able to fight alongside each other perfectly despite offending one another because they share a common goal –to protect Yona.

Shin-Ah

Though they don't share many interactions, Hak considers Shin-Ah as a capable person.[26] He also thinks that as long as Shin-Ah wears his mask, no one can approach Yona easily. When in need of an alternative clothing to hide his identity, Hak takes Shin-Ah’s fur and puts it over his head.[27]

Jae-Ha

Much like his relationship with Kija, Hak bullies Jae-Ha on every possible moment and beats him when he flirts with Yona. During their first encounters, Hak found him to be very talkative and piqued his interest about his fixation in freedom.[28] He also quickly deemed him as a pervert, but it got to point where Hak wanted to avoid him as much as possible because he thought that Jae-Ha had a thing for him based on his words and actions (which he clearly misunderstood because of the latter’s double entendre). But when they discovered that Jae-Ha was actually the Ryokuryuu, Hak had no other choice but to become allies with him. Since then, Hak has been constantly forced to show his feelings for Yona due to Jae-Ha's endeavors.[29][30] Regardless, he considers him to be a good fighter and even admits that it is inconvenient if he’s not around whenever there is a battle.[31]

Zeno

Out of all the dragon warriors, Zeno is the one Hak understands the least.[32] At first, he doubted him being the Ouryuu as he appeared frail (despite the said ability of the dragon to be sturdy) and punched Zeno to the face to test if he was the real one.[33] When he had a nightmare where Yona is killed by Soo-Won, Zeno advices him that he shouldn't worry otherwise his life will lessen and nobody would be able to replace him if he dies. Hak thinks the same applies for them dragons warriors, which Zeno appreciates hearing.[34]

Quotes

  • (To Yona) "As long as you survive, that is how you can best repay His Majesty."[35]
  • (To Yona) "His Majesty is gone now. My Master is you. Use me so that you can live. That is what I’m here for."[9]
  • (To Yoon) "When you protect someone you want to keep safe, do you always weigh your own life against theirs?”[36]

Trivia

  • In the planning phase of Akatsuki no Yona, Hak’s original name was “Soron”. It seemed too similar to “Soo-won”, so it was changed to “Hak-jin”. In the end, it was shortened to “Hak”.
  • He ranked 1st in the character popularity poll conducted by Hana to Yume in December, 2014. He scored 3,001 votes in total.[37]
